Confidence in your core assumptions and position may be misplaced leading to negative surprises.

It is easy to become complacent by relying on our past successes and thinking that if we continue doing what we are doing, we will achieve the same results.  Unfortunately, others can readily observe where you are and what you are doing and implement plans to compete with you more effectively.  Without forward movement, you can become an easy target and not even be aware that you are in the crosshairs of a competitor.  Constantly test your assumptions and take note of small, seemingly meaningless events of others to avoid negative surprises that may become obvious when it is too late to counter them.
