Explaining why a task needs to be performed is as important as explaining what has to be done.

In addition to telling people what needs to be done, managers need to also inform them why the task needs to be done.  The “why” provides insight that can be extremely helpful to individuals asked to perform the task.  This, in turn, will allow the manager to focus on other activities, leaving the details to others.  One of the most important tasks a manager can do is to eliminate obstacles blocking the path of those responsible for performing the task.  Clearing the path is very different than leading others down the path.  Let them provide self-guidance.  Armed with the insight of knowing why a task must be accomplished, individuals can accommodate variations as they most assuredly will occur.
