It is easy for us to assume that others are just like us regarding their capabilities and focus.  This can be especially problematic for developers who, without conscious and careful planning, can create products that only individuals with similar experience to the developers can use.  Obtaining initial and ongoing understanding of the end user’s capabilities is key to developing products that non-specialists can use comfortably.
