As organizations grow, more specialization occurs, and communications can become ineffective.

As a company grows, the once flat organization requires the addition of more people that focus on specific functions.  As growth continues, the span of control or ability to manage the efforts of larger groups becomes an issue that needs to be addressed.  In no time, functional silos emerge and some level of hierarchical structure is implemented.  Managing the interaction within each silo and, equally important, managing the interaction between silos is critical.
