It is extremely difficult to raise money without referenceable, paying customers.

Many early-stage entrepreneurs spend countless hours attempting to raise money from financial investors before they have referenceable customers.  Instead, they should spend time building their business and reducing risk.  The best way to show reduced risk is through external, unbiased validation.  It is measured by paying customers agreeing that you are solving a problem that needs to be solved and are willing to provide recommendations.
