Treating people fairly is often more difficult, but it is more important than treating them equally.

It is easy to fall into the trap of treating everyone equal when, in fact, they are not.  The primary criteria needs to be to treat everyone fairly.  To apply the fairness criteria, businesses need to more thoroughly examine the situation to arrive at an objective approach that can withstand outside scrutiny.  Using only equal criteria is only appropriate when the comparisons are truly equal, which is seldom the case.
