New product requirements need to carefully consider past product compatibility.

Maintaining backward compatibility with a new product can limit the degrees of freedom developers have on new products.  It can increase cost, complexity, development and testing time, and even cause field implementation issues.  However, not providing backward compatibility can negatively affect customers and business partners.  Compatibility issues need to be taken into account in all aspects of the business.
