Jumping from one activity to another is inefficient; there is really no such thing as multitasking.

Due to the availability of always-on communications such as cell phones and email, it is easy to fall into the trap of being totally interrupt-driven.  We rationalize this behavior as imperative to be responsive.  However, there are significant costs associated with being interrupt-driven that go unnoticed until we are made aware of them.  Understanding those impacts can lead to a far better-balanced approach.
